Growing Tips: Hardy Geranium
OVERVIEW
Hardy geranium, commonly known as cranesbill, is a low-maintenance, drought tolerant perennial that thrives in zones 3 - 8. Cranesbill blooms prolifically throughout late spring and early summer in shades of blue, lavender pink and white (depending on variety), providing color and interest as your spring blooms fade and summer blooms begin to open. This is a sturdy, hardy perennial that is low maintenance, attracts butterflies, and is deer and rabbit resistant. Hardy geranium is a versatile plant that works well as an edging plant, in rock gardens, beneath shrubs or in containers. A great plant for beginners!
SITE SELECTION
Choose a location with full to part sun and average soil that is well draining and with medium moisture (not too dry but not soggy). Choose sites with more shade in the hotter south and less in the north. Prefers average, slightly acidic soil but is adaptable.
PLANTING
- Plant with crown at soil level.
- Water regularly to establish; geranium prefer consistently moist soil.
- Plant 1 -3 feet apart, depending on variety.
SPRING/SUMMER CARE
- Benefits from light fertilizer application in early spring.
- Water well in dry spells, as geranium prefer evenly moist soil, though it will tolerate short dry spells after it's established.
- Cut back after the first wave of blooms. Hardy geranium tend to sprawl after they bloom.
- If you are transplanting, do so in spring before the plant is fully "awake" for the season.
- Remove dead leaves and cut back if the plants begin to sprawl.
FALL/WINTER CARE
- Cut back to the soil level and mulch to protect from heaving during the freeze/thaw cycles of winter/spring.
OTHER CARE TIPS
- No serious disease or pests.
